WALLA WALLA, Wash. (Feb. 24, 2019) – The rookie trio for Caltech women's tennis carried the Beavers to their second nationally ranked victory in as many days in a 6-3 win over No. 25 Linfield College.
Freshmen Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney), Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) and Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) each won their singles matches in straight sets after Caltech swept doubles. The Beavers also picked up another three key individual regionally ranked wins in the process.
Hyun and Yu claimed the first point at third doubles (8-5) and were soon followed by Tifrea and sophomore Ankita Roychoudhury (Madison, Conn./ Daniel Hand) at court two, 8-4. Senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) and sophomore Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) closed things out with a statement 8-4 victory over the West region's fifth-ranked team – and 19th in the nation.
Hyun and Tifrea wasted little time in clinching the match for Caltech, picking up regionally ranked wins over the West No. 19 and 16, respectively. Hyun put away her foe at third singles (6-3, 7-5) moments before Tifrea won the decisive match at court two, 6-2, 6-3. Liu and Roychoudhury would both go on to fall in super tiebreakers, but Yu closed things out in methodic fashion at #5, 6-1, 6-0.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers return to Pasadena for a nine-match home stand through the month of March, beginning with No. 24 Christopher Newport University on Sunday, Mar. 3 at 2 p.m.
