Joel Named SCIAC Athlete of the Week
PASADENA, CA – For his efforts during Caltech's two games last week, junior guard Bryan Joel was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week.
The weekly honor is voted on by the league's nine sports information directors.
The native of Bethesda, MD, was a vital cog in helping the Beavers go 2-0 during a 24-hour stretch this past weekend. He came off the bench in both games to score in double figures as they knocked off UC Santa Cruz (70-67 in OT) and Illinois Institute of Technology (82-65).
"Bryan has been working tirelessly physically and mentally the last month. This is great recognition for his efforts and something of which our team is proud," said head coach Oliver Eslinger.
During the extra session win over the Banana Slugs on Saturday, Joel scored 12 points in 24 minutes of action. His most important points came early in the overtime period when he hit a three-pointer to give Caltech the lead it wouldn't relinquish.
The following day Joel recorded a 13-point afternoon in the victory over Illinois Institute of Technology. His third steal of the day led to a key assist that ignited a 12-4 run to seal the victory.
For the week he tallied 25 points, grabbed five rebounds and recorded four steals. He was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line and 4-for-10 from behind the arc.
He is the second student-athlete from Caltech to earn the honor this month. Previously, first-year women's forward Kate Lewis earned the accolade the week of Dec. 2.
Joel is the first men's basketball player at Caltech to earn the honor since Ryan Elmquist got the nod on March 2, 2011.
