Schneider Returns to Double-Double at Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. (Jan. 6, 2017) – Freshman forward Spencer Schneider (Houston, Texas / Clearbrook) of the Caltech men's basketball team regained his double-double form when his team traveled to the University of Redlands on Saturday afternoon.

The 6-foot-6 Schneider parlayed a big second half into his fifth double-double of the season. Following a 13-point second half, the reigning SCIAC Athlete of the Week finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds, seven of which came on the defensive end. Sophomore point guard Alec Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) matched Schneider in the scoring department, picking up 17 points to go with three assists and two steals. Nine of his points came from beyond the arc, as was the case for freshman guard Marcus Gee (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica). Gee followed up a breakout performance against Pomona-Pitzer with 13 points and a 3-of-6 line from the three-point land.

Caltech led by as many as six points six minutes into the game. A 7-0 run, kicked off by a Calvin Huh (Fort Lee, N.J. / Bergen Tech) jumper and capped by a layup from freshman guard Gokul Srinivasaragavan (San Ramon, Calif. / Dougherty Valley) gave the Beavers some early confidence against their SCIAC foes. Attention to detail defensively caused the Beavers to remain within striking distance even after the Bulldogs began to finish shots late in the game. The visitors held Trevor Baker, the conference's leading scorer to 10-points below his season average. Caltech helped itself similar to how they helped themselves against Pomona-Pitzer by cutting down on the turnovers. The Beavers' 12 giveaways is four below their season average and they shared the ball well with 15 team assists in executing their regular offensive gameplan.

Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will return to the road on Monday, Jan. 8 when they take on Chapman University at
