PASADENA (Dec. 19, 2018) – A commanding first half was not enough for Caltech men's basketball to stave off 2018 NCAA Championship participant Hanover College in a heartbreaker despite another pair of impressive performances by junior Alec Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) and sophomore Spencer Schneider (Houston, Texas / Clearbrook) on Wednesday evening.

Andrews and Schneider combined for 32 of Caltech's 58 points on 50 percent shooting, with each hitting 3-of-6 three-point attempts. Schneider finished one rebound shy of a double-double and dished out three assists while Andrews also contributed six assists, two steals and two blocks.

Hanover scored the opening five points of the game, but the Beavers defense locked in to hold the Panthers scoreless over a seven-minute stretch to surge ahead by 10 and poured it on for a 20-point halftime margin. The visitors managed just 12 points on 21 percent shooting from the field while Caltech could not miss, including a 50-percent mark with seven made three-pointers.

The Panthers steadily clawed back into the game throughout the second half, however, eventually tying it up at 48-48. The magic Caltech had found in its previous four close wins this year did not resurface this time and Hanover held on through a tense final minute for the victory.

Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers return to the court on Friday afternoon against Lewis & Clark College at 2 p.m.
