PASADENA (Dec. 14, 2019) – Senior guard Alec Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) dished out a season-best 12 assists when the Caltech men's basketball team rematched the University of California, Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon.
Andrews and the Beavers took command of the game with perhaps the best collective first-half performance of the season. The senior, who closed the game with eight points, assisted on Caltech's first four baskets and went on to keep the Beavers on top for much of the game thanks to a series of heads-up plays. One such play involved the senior coming up with a clutch steal around the Banana Slugs' basket before passing the ball the length of the court and finding sophomore Noah Barnes (Springfield, Va. / Jefferson) in stride for an easy layup to give the home team a three-point lead with just under four minutes to go. Eight of the senior's assists came in a dominant first-half for the host Beavers, who led the Banana Slugs, 34-24 at the break.
The Beavers initially took the lead with 7:36 to go in the first half and went on to hold the lead until the game's final minutes. The visiting Slugs battled back late and went on to even the season series, but not without some Caltech players rising to the occasion. Junior guard Marcus Gee (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) led the Beavers with 17 points and senior Ross Carter (Sudbury, Mass. / The Rivers School) provided the home team with some key minutes off the bench while contributing six points and seven rebounds. The Beavers also managed to come out on top in the turnover battle 12-18.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will have a chance to return to the win column on Tuesday, Dec. 17 when they host the University of Chicago at 3:00 p.m.
