Early Deficit Too Much to Overcome for Caltech

PASADENA, Calif.-  Caltech was unable to overcome an early deficit, despite keeping pace throughout the game.  Occidental added two late goals to make the final score line appear worse than it was for the Beavers who put in a fantastic effort, but were not able to score.

Bryar Brandvold scored in the 10th minute to give Occidental the early lead.  His goal was off a corner kick taken by Zoe Johnson, the ball came to the far post and Brandvold redirected it into the goal.

Caltech created combinations in the center of midfield, but was often lacking on the final pass needed to create a quality opportunity in the first half.

In the 65th minute Caltech ratcheted up the pressure and had two great opportunities to tie the game.  Sarah Wright played a through ball to Alec Sands, but Occidental's goalkeeper Tristan Cooper came flying out of his net and knocked the ball away from Sands at the top of the box.  Two minutes later Thomas Kwok had an opportunity to tie the game, but his poor-angled shot from five yards out only found the side netting.

Caltech continued to push forward to find the game-tying goal, but the move backfired as Marcus Brandford scored in the 80th minute on a header.  Reid Sakamoto played the ball to the wing, and Alex Ayala crossed it to the back post where Brandford headed it in.

Occidental made it a 3-0 game eight minutes later when Alex Ayala again crossed the ball, but this time his cross found Michael Tonetti.  Tonetti side footed the ball into the goal to provide the final margin.

Wesley Swank was only forced into three saves in the game but his most important came while the game was still a 1-0 contest.  He came out of the net and stopped a breakaway attempt.
