Late Goals Halt Caltech's Senior Day Efforts
PASADENA, CA - Occidental broke open a scoreless game with two late goals that proved to be enough in posting a 2-0 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon.
In the final game of the season, it was senior day for Caltech as the Beavers honored Thomas Kwok, Luke Harrison, Chan-Hee Koh, and Daniel Yiu Wah Lo. Kwok was the only four-year player among the group.
The opening half saw each team get chances to score but the defenses stood strong. Opportunities in the first half for both teams came early. The Tigers hit the post in the 12th minute then Caltech responded in 14th minute when Alec Sands had a shot from inside the box. Occidental had 11 shots, including seven on goal, while the Beavers produced six shots, two of which were on goal, during the opening 45 minutes of action.
In the 56th minute Evren Gocken made a run for the Beavers on a long ball through the middle. The first-year was able to get a shot off from a high bounce but it went right at the goalie.
Occidental broke through in the 72nd minute when Muraj Sinah scored off of Michael Tonetti's corner kick.
Both teams continued to pressure until the Tigers put an insurance goal on the board in the 89th minute. Tonetti served a ball through middle from 35 yards and Garrett Schwab was able to get a foot on it and put it behind Caltech goalie J.D. Feist.
The visitors posted a 21-11 total shot advantage in helping them grab the conference win.
Feist made 12 saves for Caltech while the combo of Tristan Cooper and Theo Atkinson combined to make five for the Tigers.
