PASADENA (Mar. 27, 2019) – The 21st-ranked Caltech men's tennis team put on a clinic, taking eight matches from George Fox University during Wednesday's home match.
Sophomore Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) picked up the Beavers' most significant win of the day when he took out the 21st-ranked player in Division III, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at first singles. Classmate James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) came a few breaks away from a nationally-ranked win of his own at second singles, falling 3-6, 7-5, (13-11). The duo came together earlier in the morning, however to take down the 17th-ranked doubles team in the nation in a convincing 8-3 fashion.
Elsewhere, sophomore Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) pulled out a tough three-set win at third singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and earlier teamed with freshman Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) to get the Beavers a win at third doubles.
Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers will now have a few days to prepare for what might be the most important match of the season to date at the University of Redlands on Saturday, Mar. 30 at 10 a.m.
