PASADENA (Nov. 21, 2019) – Juniors Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) of the 24th-ranked Caltech men's tennis team will begin the upcoming 2020 season as the eighth-ranked doubles team in Division III according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Shanker and Wei earned their ranking for their level of play at the 2019 ITA Cup. After qualifying for the national tournament with a finals berth at ITA Regionals, the most decorated doubles team in Caltech history defeated Southern Virginia University's Blonquist and Motlojoa, 6-3, 6-0, before running into the top-seeded Williams duo Taylor and Frelinghuysen and coming up short of an upset. Blonquist and Motlojoa went on to earn ninth in the national rankings, signifying a quality win for the Caltech duo. Shanker and Wei will also enter the season as the West's second-ranked doubles team and Wei as the region's 13th-ranked singles player.
Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers will next take the court in January 2020 when they head to Hawaii for a five-day training trip. Once there, they will take on No. 13 Trinity University, Pacific University and Hawaii Pacific University.
