Grabowski Has Record Evening; Presidents Get Win
PASADENA, CA - The Washington & Jefferson men's water polo team overcame a record setting performance to post an 18-12 win over Caltech on Thursday evening.
In the home home opener for Caltech, junior goalie Ben Grabowski stopped a school record 21 shots.
The teams traded goals in the opening eight minutes as they found themselves deadlocked at 2-2. Caltech grabbed a 4-3 lead when Tomas Tussie scored with 4:22 left until halftime. However, the visitors finished the frame by scoring four of the next five goals as they took a 7-5 lead at the game's halfway point.
A high scoring third perod saw the teams combine for 10 goals. The Presidents never let the Beavers closer than two goals. Washington & Jefferson slowly built their lead from 8-6 early in period to 13-9 entering the final eight minutes of action.
During that final period Caltech got their deficit down to 14-12 when Jim Blackwood lofted a perfect shot with 3:32 left in the contest. However, Washington & Jefferson put any hopes of Beavers comeback away by scoring the game's final four goals.
The high scoring game saw four different players record a hat trick. Blackwood had a game high six goals while the Presidents offense was led by Carl Krause's four-goal evening.
