Caltech Drops Home Finale to #1 Whittier
PASADENA, CA - In their final home contest of the season, the Beavers fought well against the nation's top ranked NCAA Division III team but ultimately fell 14-7 to Whittier.
"Although the scoreboard had us on the wrong end of ledger we did a lot of great things today," said first-year head coach Pat Beemer. "We executed a lot of what we wanted to do and I'm pleased with the effort the guys gave today."
The Beavers matched Whittier's first two goals before the visitors nudged ahead with the final two goals of the first period. The Poets increased their 4-2 lead by scoring five of the six goals in the second period.
An evenly matched second half saw the Poets hold just a one-goal scoring edge. Whittier won the third frame 4-3. The final period saw the teams each score a goal each. Caltech scored one of its most beautiful goals of the season when Ben Grabowski fed Jim Blackwood who in-turn passed a gorgeous ball to Patric Eck in front of the cage for the game's final goal.
"In terms of execution, that was absolute perfection," Beemer said. "That play embodies the potential this squad has."
Chris Bradley, Eck and Blackwood each found the back of the cage twice while Matt Lappin scored his second of the season to round out the Beavers scoring.
Grabowski played solid in net by making 12 saves.
The Beavers will get an opportunity for a measure of revenge against Occidental on Friday afternoon. The two teams will participate in the SCIAC championship play-in game at 1 p.m. at Chapman.
