PASADENA (Oct. 16, 2019) – The Caltech men's water polo team got off to another strong start against a SCIAC foe on Wednesday evening, this time against the University of La Verne.
The Beavers appeared to dig themselves out of a 4-1 hole by answering with a pair of late goals in the first period, scored by freshman Matthew Hajjar (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) and junior Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis). When the Leopards answered back with just 13 seconds to go in the quarter, they carried the momentum into the remaining periods, though the Beavers did manage to match their early output with a trio of fourth period goals.
Hajjar led the way with two goals while junior Rahul Arun (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E Stevenson)'s three assists also led the team. Arun scored a notable goal in the waning seconds of the game when he took a pass from sophomore Alex Wang (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School) and lofted it just over the reach of the opposing goalkeeper. Wang, along with junior Neil Sanderson (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Winchester), and freshman Max Bricken (Portland, Ore. / Westview) added the remaining Caltech goals, while senior goalkeeper Bradley Justice (El Cajon, Calif. / Grossmont) contributed in a variety of ways. Justice reached double-digit saves and also swiped four steals and assisted on Hajjar's second goal with a nice coast-to-coast pass.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will return to the pool this Saturday when they travel to Whittier College.
