REDLANDS, Calif. (Nov. 9, 2019) – Freshman Max Bricken (Portland, Ore. / Westview) posted his best scoring game of the season for the Caltech men's water polo team at the University of Redlands on Saturday afternoon.
The freshman led Caltech against one of the SCIAC's most experienced rosters with five goals and two assists, with four goals coming within the first half. Thanks to Bricken's offensive efforts, the Beavers went into halftime trailing the Bulldogs by just one goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Wei Foo (Hacienda Heights, Calif. / Troy) drew the start and responded with 11 big saves to keep the Bulldogs at bay. Junior Rahul Arun (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E Stevenson) also got in on the defensive action with two additional field blocks to prevent the home team in certain spots. Arun also picked up one goal and one assist. Other Beavers to find the back of the net included sophomore Alex Wang (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School), junior John Wang (Louisville, Ky. / Phillips Exeter Academy), freshman James Bowden (Los Angeles, Calif. / Granada Hills Charter) and junior Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis), who had two goals and two assists as well as a trio of steals.
"We played a heckuva game," Head Coach Jon Bonafede said. "We scored goals all around the perimeter and did a great job of keeping our composure and responding when necessary. Our guys were a lot of fun to watch and coach today."
Bonafede and the Beavers will have four days to prepare for their next contest at home against Occidental College. The annual Orange Out game is set for Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
