Beavers Engage in Defensive Battle with Oxy

PASADENA (Nov. 13, 2019) – The Caltech men's water polo team had perhaps its best collective effort of the 2019 season against visiting Occidental College in the annual Orange Out game on Wednesday.

The Caltech defense showcased a combination of skill and aggression and collectively held the Tigers off the scoreboard for the first eight minutes of the game. Senior goalkeeper Bradley Justice (El Cajon, Calif. / Grossmont) played with a ton of heart in net, totaling 13 saves in perhaps his best game of the season, with five of his saves coming in the initial frame. The strong, unified play from the players in front of him played a factor in Justice's big game. Sophomore Austin Harvard (Lake Forest, Calif. / El Toro) came up with a big field block to thwart an open look from the visiting team in the third quarter with just two goals separating the two teams. Harvard also got the Caltech offense going with the game's opening goal two minutes in.

As the Tigers began to come on late, so too did the Beavers. Junior Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis), who had two assists prior, finally got an open look against the Occidental defense towards the end of the third period and dumped the ball into the net for his only goal of the game. Freshman Matthew Hajjar (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) followed up with the final goal of the period to cut the deficit to one. Ultimately, foul trouble hampered the Beavers' depth late and allowed the Tigers to find enough openings to keep the home team at bay. Freshman Max Bricken (Portland, Ore. / Westview) led the Beavers with three goals, including a five-meter penalty at the end of the game and classmate James Bowden (Los Angeles, Calif. / Granada Hills Charter) added a pair of assists on two nice passes. Juniors John Wang (Louisville, Ky. / Phillips Exeter Academy) and Nick Clausen (Clovis, Calif. / Clovis East) rounded out the scoring Beavers, with Wang creating his own separation on his fourth-quarter strike.

Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will finish up the 2019 season on Saturday, Nov. 16 against second-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
