Men's Water Polo Triumphs Over Chaffey College

PASADENA, Calif (Sep 13, 2022) – The Caltech men's water polo team was victorious over Chaffey College at home on Tuesday evening, defeating the Panthers 14-8. 

The game started off strong when sophomore utility player Sean Zheng (San Marino, Calif. / Polytechnic School) won the first-period sprint, creating momentum for the Beavers.  After 3 minutes of scoreless play, senior 2-meter defender Max Bricken (Portland, Ore. / Westview) broke through the Panthers' defense and netted the game's first goal at 5:01 with an assist from senior center forward Matthew Hajjar (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School).  The remainder of the period continued to see strong defense from both teams.  With 20 seconds remaining, however, Zheng found the back of the net with help from freshman utility player Bram Schork (Villanova, Pa. / The Haverford School). The Beavers held the Panthers scoreless thorough the first, and they would not score until 6:43 in the second period. 

Zheng opened the second period by winning the sprint and taking possession for the Beavers. Soon after, Bricken scored the first goal of the period at 7:10 then turned around and assisted Schork with a goal at 6:19. Afterwards, the Panthers tightened their defense until senior 2-meter defender James Bowden found the back of the net at 1:42 with help from freshman Sujit Iyer (Marietta, Ga. / Wheeler). With 13 seconds remaining, Schork fired one into the goal, giving the Beavers a 6-2 lead at halftime. Senior Wei Foo (Hacienda Heights, Calif. / Troy) kept goal for the first half of the game and played a vital role in getting the Beavers ahead with his 5 saves and only 2 goals against. 

Schork won the third-period sprint to open the game's second half. Bowden then quickly scored first at 6:03 with an assist from Hajjar. One minute later, Foo scored on a powerplay with an assist from Schork. Bowden scored soon after at 4:28 with an assist from Zheng, then aided Bricken's goal at 3:46. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the period, Zheng scored on the Panthers with an assist from junior utility player Colton Johnson (Eureka, Calif. / Eureka). To close out the period, Bricken scored at 10 seconds with help from Foo. The Beavers would never let the Panthers come within 5 goals for the remainder of the game. Heading into the fourth period, Schork won another sprint and Bricken scored first at 6:25. The Panthers would hold the Beavers to 13 goals until Schork launched one into the net at 2:17 with an assist from Bowden. The Beavers would go to defeat Chaffey College 14-8, creating a two-game win streak.
