Low Post Effort Aids in Occidental Win

PASADENA, CA – The Occidental women's basketball posted a 69-43 SCIAC win over Caltech on Thursday evening.

The Tigers paint effort was solid as they posted a 30-12 edge in points down low. Occidental was efficient with their 13 three-point attempts as they converted on six of them; including a 5-for-9 second half performance.

The first several minutes of the game were played closely as Caltech hit three of their first four shots but Occidental nudged ahead 14-10. The visitors padded their lead during a 19-3 scoring spurt as they went ahead 30-13 with 5:18 left until halftime.

Caltech finished the first half solidly as they scored eight of the stanza's final 11 points. A Crystal Goodwin three-pointer was the only field goal that the Tigers hit during the final 5:17 of half. However, Occidental went into the half with a 33-21 lead.

Occidental, who came into the game tied in the loss column with two others schools for the SCIAC's top spot, build their first half lead with their low post presence. The Tigers outscored Caltech 20-4 in the paint.

The early moments of the second half fell into Caltech's favor. They held the Tigers without a field goal for the first 4:25 of the period as they cut their deficit to 35-24. However, Occidental overcame their early shooting woes by hitting four consecutive shots as they slowly grabbed the game's momentum. Occidental pulled away midway through the stanza with a 12-2 scoring spurt.

Caltech's Stephanie Wong continued her stellar first-year campaign as she scored a game high 16 points while playing all 40 minutes. She tied for team high rebounding honors with six. Sarah Wright and Grace Leishman each corralled six boards.

Makenzie Brandon had a team best 15 points and eight rebounds for Occidental.
