CLAREMONT, CA – A mix of strong defense and solid offense lifted ClaremontMuddScripps to an 88-39 win over Caltech on Saturday evening.
The Athenas limited the Caltech offense to two field goals early on as they jumped out to 13-2 lead five minutes into the game. None the less the Beavers hit back-to-back jumpers to get their deficit down to five points less than two minutes later.
Unfortunately for Caltech the game's momentum completely shifted towards ClaremontMuddScripps moments later. Already holding a 20-10 edge, the Athenas scored 22 of the next 24 points to go in front 42-12. The home never relented the rest of the game.
Coming into the contest the Athenas co-led the conference with Redlands. Saturday's game showed why they will contend for the league title as they held Caltech under 30 percent from the field while connecting on 54.4 percent (31-of-57) of their field goal attempts. In addition, they nailed 10 of their 16 attempts from behind the arc.
Kristen Anderson led all Caltech scorers by scoring a season high 14 points. The sophomore went 5-for-14 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds.
Kate Lewis made her return to the floor the Beavers for the first time since mid-December. The first-year, who started six of her first seven collegiate games, played 10 minutes and scored three points.
Kris Brackman scored an Athenas best 12-points off the bench. Sarah King (11) and Kyra Ray (10) also scored in double figures. All told, ClaremontMuddScripps placed 16 players into the scoring column.
