PASADENA, Calif. (Dec. 2, 2014) – Caltech women's basketball sophomore Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) has been named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Female Athlete of the Week for Dec. 2.
Lewis broke out over the three-game Thanksgiving slate, recording her fourth career double-double with a dominant 24-point, 13-rebound effort against 5-2 Linfield College to start the week. She went on to average 19.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 44.4 percent from the field as she was named to the Caltech-Occidental Fall Classic All-Tournament Team. Lewis has notched three 20-point efforts and currently leads the SCIAC with 18.0 points per game.
"Kate has been doing a great job expanding her game as we have shifted our offense from last year to give her more room to work on offense," Head Coach Sandra Marbut said. "She is very receptive to feedback and learning what she has to do to keep improving, and it has been great to watch that process. I knew she could be a bigger part of where we are trying to go as a program, and we allowed her to feel that out as a freshman. She did the work in the offseason and you can see the results already."
This is the second straight year Lewis has received the Athlete of the Week honor, as she was recognized for the week preceding Dec. 1 as a rookie last season, when she became the first player since 2008-09 to receive the award. She is now the only two-time honoree in program history.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut will lead Lewis and the rest of the Beavers as they host Lewis & Clark College on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m.
