Eiden Hits 1,000 in Valiant Senior Day Effort

PASADENA (Feb. 16, 2019) – Senior center Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) capped a season for the ages with her 1,001st career point in Caltech women's basketball's season finale against the University of Redlands on Saturday.

Eiden closed her historic career averaging a dominant 16.3 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 1.3 assists and 0.6 steals per game while leading the SCIAC in field goals percentage (58.8) and field goals per game (6.5). Her likely All-SCIAC season – which could become the team's only First Team honor – in part fueled a record-breaking year for Caltech women's basketball. The Beavers posted program records for wins, both overall (10) and in the SCIAC (four), including an incredible late-season run with five wins coming in their last eight games.

Entering the night 22 points shy of 1,000, Eiden quickly dropped 10 in the first quarter to pull within range of the milestone based on her season average while pacing the Beavers to a four-point lead. The Bulldogs managed to adjust, however, limiting her to just two in the second quarter and five in the third, yet with Caltech still on top by two. The senior finally pulled within one basket of the mark with 6:02 remaining and following an agonizing four minutes as the Beavers defense dug in to hold their lead, Eiden made a fantastic move from the right block for a left-handed layup to send the crowd into a frenzy while staking Caltech to a three-point edge.

Redlands quickly responded with a layup at the other end and the teams traded fruitless possessions until the final 20 seconds, when the Bulldogs held the ball before sinking their specialty, a midrange jumper, and then watching the Beavers' matching effort clang off the back iron as the buzzer sounded.

Junior guard Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) poured in another 14 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and five assists in her bid to earn All-SCIAC honors for a third consecutive season. Senior Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) also closes her career among the top 20 scorers in the conference at 10.6 points per game, as does classmate Madeline Schemel (Westport, Conn. / Staples) in the rebounding (6.0) and blocks (0.7) rankings.
