WHITTIER, Calif. (Jan. 6, 2020) – The Caltech women's basketball once again showed an ability to hang tough with SCIAC competition, this time at Whittier College on Wednesday evening.
Senior forward Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) had a stellar night on the glass, scooping up 15 rebounds to go with 14 points. The Beavers made it a point to find the senior post player with frequency on Wednesday thanks to her recent surge at the free-throw line. Wednesday's game was no exception, as Lauinger went 8-for-10 on free throws, leading Caltech to a collective 15-for-21 mark. Senior guard Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) led the visitors in the scoring department with 17 points while knocking down a trio of three-pointers. The senior also accounted for four assists.
The visiting Beavers started strong and finished strong against the Poets, ending the first quarter trailing by just one point while outscoring the home team, 16-13, in the fourth quarter. Together, Peng and Lauinger combined for 13 of the Beavers' 16 points in the final frame. Meanwhile, freshman Sahana Saikumar (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) found multiple ways to affect the game. The rookie forward scored 16 points while also adding nine rebounds and three blocks on the defensive end. Caltech managed to hang with Whittier at points thanks to a collective 40-percent night from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Faith Pinney (Spokane, Wash. / Gonzaga Preparatory School) scored all six of her points thanks to the deep ball.
Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will play at home for the first time in 2020 on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 4 p.m. when they take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
