ORANGE, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2019) – Freshman defender Catherine Kauber (Pleasantville, N.Y. / Pleasantville) of the Caltech women's soccer team scored the first goal of her career at Chapman University in Saturday's SCIAC match.
The goal came 18 minutes into the first half when the Beavers had a numbers advantage in the box. Junior midfielder Rachel Sun (Tustin, Calif. / Beckman) redirected the ball out of the air and made the successful pass to Kauber, who hammered home the open look from the left side.
Defensively, the Beavers were forced to contend with one of the SCIAC's top offenses but held up in the second half when they allowed the Panthers just one goal on 11 shots. Freshman goalkeeper Valerie Hetherington (Bozeman, Mon. / Deerfield Academy) spent the entire game in net and made seven saves. The rookie stopper is now seven saves away from taking over the single-season saves record.
Head Coach Ellery Gould and the Beavers will be shooting for their first SCIAC win this Wednesday, Oct. 23, when they host Whittier College in the annual Orange Out game at 4 p.m.
