Beavers Fall in Thrilling Five-Set Contest

PASADENA, CA - Santa Ana did just enough to win a thrilling match over Caltech 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-14, 19-25, 19-17) in a non-conference match on Wednesday.

In the decisive fifth set the Beavers jumped out in front 9-6. However, the Dons responded by winning four consecutive points to grab a 10-9 advantage. After the teams traded points, Santa Ana took a 14-11 edge. However, a fiesty Beavers squad continued to fight as they won four consecutive points to grab a match point of their own.

Santa Ana was able to fight off that match point against them. It was the only match point the Beavers had. On Santa Ana's sixth match point they final claimed the win.

The Don's did just enough in pulling out the match. While Caltech held a 46-45 edge in team kills, the visitors out blocked the Beavers 6.0-5.0 while holding 19-9 edge in service aces.

Paige Logan and Catherine Jamshidi each set career highs for most kills in a match. Logan tallied a match high 20 kills to bring her career total to 423. Her career mark is just three kills away from the school record. Furthermore, Logan's 20-kill evening tied her for the second most in a single match in Beaver lore.

Jamshidi surpassed her previous career high of 12 with a 18-kill performance. She also produced her fourth career double-double as she tied for team high honors in digs with 14.

Rachel Hess set a career best mark for assists as she handed out 38. Hess also contributed a double-double by tallying 13 digs. Lisa Lee tied Jamshidi for team high dig honors.

Santa Ana's Michelle Nguyen had a team best 18 kills while tying teammate Alegandra Alegandro for match high honors in digs with 22.

Caltech returns to SCIAC play on Friday when they host Occidental at 7:30 p.m.
