Li Makes All-SCIAC, Gardner Gets Coach of the Year Nod

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2019) – Senior Lauren Li (Bellaire, Texas / Bellaire) became the first player in the history of the Caltech volleyball program to receive All-SCIAC recognition, while Head Coach Tom Gardner and his staff received SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

Li, who was named to Second Team All-SCIAC, posted a career season with 235 kills on a .211 percentage. The senior will go down as arguably the best offensive player to come through the program to date, as her 702 career kills are a Caltech volleyball record. Li is also the only player in Caltech history to register multiple seasons of 200 kills or greater.

Li and her teammates progressed and thrived under the leadership of Gardner and Assistant Coach Lea Taylor. The sixth-year Caltech head coach led his team to its first 10-win season in more than 20 years as well as its first season of multiple SCIAC victories, which also included a sweep of Occidental College. Gardner-coached players now occupy the majority of single-season and career statistical records thanks to a season where the Beavers statistically raised the bar in nearly every team category. Gardner and the Beavers will look to build upon their impressive season down the line with 2019 serving as the new standard for Caltech volleyball.
