Johnston Leads Tough First Quarter Against Oxy

PASADENA (Mar. 20, 2019) – Led by two early goals from senior Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore), the Caltech women's water polo team got off to a nice start against Occidental College in Wednesday's SCIAC clash.

The Beavers and Tigers spent the first four minutes jockeying for position defensively, but Johnston's tally got the home team on the board first with classmate Gemma Takahashi (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) picking up the assist. The two seniors made another connection, this time with Takahashi on the receiving end of a Johnston pass to put Caltech back on top. Johnston then went on to score her team's final goal of the quarter and her last of the game, finishing with a pair of goals and assists. Caltech collectively fired an additional seven shots on net against the Tigers with five different players registering at least one of the Beavers' six goals.

Freshman goalkeeper Zoe Rock (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) played a significant role on the defensive end as well, stopping nine Occidental shots. The rookie backstop now has three consecutive games with at least seven saves.

Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will complete their recent homestand on Saturday, Mar. 21 when they host Chapman University at 7 p.m.
