PASADENA (Apr. 11, 2019) – The Caltech women's water polo team tallied six goals at the University of La Verne on Wednesday with its senior players taking top billing.
Senior Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) led Caltech with four goals and an additional eight attempts while classmate Brittany Percin (Lake Tahoe, Calif. / Stanford Online) put in two goals of her own. As of this writing, both players are currently vying for the career goals record and should continue to do so up until the final whistle of 2019. Anothe senior, Michelle Zhao (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) picked up her first and second assists of the season while senior Gemma Takahashi (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) and freshman Sophie Devoe (La Jolla, Calif. / Bishop's) added helpers for the visiting team.
The Beavers matched the Leopards' scoring output in the second half, going goal-for-goal with the home team in each of the final two quarters. Freshman goalkeeper Zoe Rock (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) continued her evolution into a starting backstop with seven saves and one steal to help keep the game competitive throughout its entirety.
"Zoe did well with some great saves to keep us close," Head Coach Jon Bonafede said. "It was also good to see Brittany play well. She shook three people off her for a bar out shot in the second quarter close to halftime, which was very impressive."
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will next face off with first-place Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on the road this Saturday, Apr. 13 at 11 a.m.
