Cross Country Reveals 2019 Schedule

Cross Country Reveals 2019 Schedule
PASADENA (July 10, 2019) – The Caltech men's and women's cross country teams have unveiled their joint schedule for the 2019 fall season.

Schedule

The Beavers open the season with another appearance at the University of Redlands Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 31. Rather than compete at the traditional 6k and 8k distance, the women will compete in the 4.5k run while the men compete in the 6k. Both teams began the 2018 season in Redlands and responded with a combined six top-20 finishers in a field consisting of athletes from Division II and Division III.

The Beavers will return to the UCR Invitational in Riverside on Sept. 14 and also return to The Mustang Challenge in Santa Clarita for a second consecutive year on Sept. 28, where they will get to test themselves on a challenging course against a variety of teams from all divisions. While the men's team ran to a new record in team average in Riverside last season, then-sophomore Claire Hu (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M. Gunn) finished one-tenth of a second off the program record in the women's race. The Beavers will next compete on Oct. 12 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on a course at which each gender historically has been successful. Caltech used last year's Pomona-Pitzer Invite as an opportunity to get back to full strength, though each team also received strong runs from Hu and freshman Gaurav Phanse (Fremont, Calif. / Dublin).

The Pomona-Pitzer Invite will be the squad's final regular-season tune-up before heading back to Claremont on Saturday, Nov. 2 for the 2019 SCIAC Championships. Last year's championship race featured highlights for both programs as well as the individual runners. The men and women each earned their highest place of finish since the SCIAC expansion and moved to fifth in the conference after notching sixth-place finishes the year before. The Beavers also had Phanse and junior Simon Ricci (Chicago, Ill. / Latin School of Chicago) take home All-SCIAC Second Team honors on the men's side, while Hu led the women and junior Skye Reese (Concord, N.H. / Concord) broke out with the strongest run of her career.

The last guaranteed race of 2019, the NCAA West Regional Championships, will be contested in Claremont on Saturday, Nov. 16. Both teams will look to improve on last year's exceptional regional finishes, which capped off arguably the most successful season in the history of the program. Qualification for the following weekend's NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky. will also be on the line.
